HUMAN TRAFFICKING: AN INCREASING PHENOMENON IN TRANSPORT

Human trafficking is still a problem in our modern transport world. For example in Zeebrugge, there was an increase of 50% in the number of arrested stowaways in the first quarter of 2019 in comparison with last year.

Not only the human aspect is distressing. When a trucker discovers stowaways, it might have also a big impact on his own safety and on the cargo. Stowaways can cause cargo damage, delays, high fines, confiscation of the truck and trailer and even violent abuse against the truckdriver.

HOW TO AVOID STOWAWAYS

Make sure that the cargo is very well secured, if possible, put a seal on the trailer. Load the cargo without any small gaps between the goods.

During rest times or breaks, it is recommended that truckdrivers use parking lots that are very visible and park together with other truckdrivers. They can keep an eye on each other’s vehicles. In case they see anything suspicious, they can alert the driver and the police.

Traffickers are very inventive, and they will not only hide people in and on top of the cargo. Checking the axles, the storage compartments and wind deflector is needed before a driver takes his break and when he wants to start driving again.
